Are dry bags really waterproof?
Yes—if sealed properly. Most waterproof dry bags use roll-top closures and durable materials like PVC or TPU fabric. Not all are submersible, so check the IP rating:
- IPX6 dry bags: Splashproof and brief submersion
- IPX7 dry bags: Submersion up to 1m
- IPX8 dry bags: Submersion beyond 1m
How do I seal a dry bag correctly?
To maintain a watertight seal:
- Pack your gear with space at the top
- Roll the top down 3+ times
- Now clasp the clips the opposite direction to the roll, this ensures you get a good waterproof seal
- For extra floatable dry bags, trap a bit of air inside
- see our video here of how to roll your dry bag - click here

What can I use a dry bag for?
- Bags for Paddleboarding
- Bag for Swimming
- Wild swimming kit
- Rainy hikes or muddy festivals
- Beach gear (sand-proof & splash-proof)
- Bags for Kayaking and canoeing essentials
- Separating wet gear from clean clothes while travelling
Can I use it for dirty laundry or smelly kit?
Absolutely. Odour-proof dry bags make excellent stuff sacks. Keep your clean gear fresh and hide your stinkiest socks with confidence.
Do dry bags float?
Yes—when air’s inside. These floating dry bags aren’t life-saving devices, but they’ll bob along beside your SUP or kayak like trusty little cargo pods.
What are dry bags made of?
- PVC tarpaulin: Tough, rugged, perfect for rocky terrain
- PU-coated nylon dry bags: Lightweight and great for layering inside other backpacks
What is a wet bag for Swimming?
How does a Wet Bag differ from a Dry Bag?
- Wet bags are designed to contain moisture inside, ideal for storing wet swimsuits.
- Dry bags are fully waterproof and meant to keep water out, protecting dry items (e.g., clothes, phones) from getting wet. However, they can also hold wet gear. Dry bags are often larger and more durable, suitable for wetsuits or beach trips.
💦 Waterproof Bags vs Dry Bags — What’s the Difference?
What Is a Waterproof Bag?
A waterproof bag is designed to resist water entry using materials like PVC or TPU. It may include zip-seal, flap, or roll-top closures.
Waterproof bags come in various forms. Backpacks, duffels, and totes and offer protection from rain, splashes, and the odd spill.
What Is a Dry Bag?
A dry bag is specifically built to be airtight, watertight, and highly durable. It typically features a roll-top closure system, which, when appropriately sealed, traps air, allowing it to float and keep your contents completely dry.
These are essential for:
- Paddleboarding or kayaking
- Wild swimming or boating
- Camping in unpredictable weather
- Keeping spare clothes and gear dry on the go
How do I clean and care for a waterproof dry bag?
- Rinse with fresh water after saltwater sessions
- Air dry fully before storing
- Avoid abrasive cleaners to protect the waterproof coating
How can I test if my dry bag is leak-proof?
Try the tissue test:
- Place dry tissue inside
- Seal and briefly submerge
- Dry outside, then inspect—dry tissue = success
How long do dry bags last?
Years, when cared for. Heavy-duty models survive beaches, boats, and backpack abuse. Lighter ones may lose waterproofing over time (but can be re-treated)

Had a lot of lovely comments about my new watermelon backpack
Its very comfortable to wear as a back pack. I know its meant to be a dry bag too, but ideally it could have done with a few more internal pockets to use as a backpack, otherwise all good
Thanks for your feedback Beverley, glad you love your bag, yes its a bit of a showstopper! :)
